Lackawanna County is one of the most underserved communities in Pennsylvania.  To combat this adversity, we turned an abandoned greenhouse into a community asset. What started out initially as a way to provide plant seedling free of charge to the elderly and other underserved members of the community, has grown into a community garden which has brought neighbors together and fosters the community's mental and physical health.  We now work with the local community college to train veterans to become productive farmers and supply the local food bank with produce which they may distribute.

What we’ve accomplished:

1.

We've given away hundreds of seedlings to community members at no cost or little cost so they may start their own gardens and have access to fresh healthy vegetables. As well as donating produce grown in our community to the local food bank so all our neighbors may have fresh vegetables as part of their meals.

2.

We work with youth groups and other school age children so they may earn Community Service credit introducing them to planting and harvesting fresh vegetables.  Making them more interested in eating what they have grown and getting outdoors.

3.

We're now working with the local community college to develop programs for veterans and other underserved populations to train them to become productive farmers.  The programs we have developed may receive credit as part of a goal to a larger degree in Sustainable Agriculture at the local college.
